Havasupai
We stayed at the Grand Canyon Caverns Inn in Peach Springs, Arizona, the night before our Havasupai hike. Havasupai, located in the Grand Canyon, is famous for its turquoise-blue waterfalls and is home to the Havasupai Tribe. Supai village, accessible only by hiking, horseback, or helicopter, has the only post office where mail is delivered by mule—each mule carrying up to 200 pounds on the 8-mile trek.
On the morning of the hike, we picked up our reservations for the lodge and pack mule, had breakfast, and drove an hour to the trailhead. After dropping off our bags for the mule, we began the 8-mile hike. The first 1.5 miles was a steep 1,200-foot descent into the valley, followed by a scenic 7-mile hike. We stopped for lunch on the way and eventually reached the entrance to the Supai village. From there, we walked another mile to the lodge in the village. Our bags, delivered by mule, were already waiting for us. After the 9-mile hike, we relaxed at the lodge with some tea and chaat.
The next morning, we had breakfast and walked 2 miles to Havasu Falls, the most iconic waterfall with a dramatic drop into a turquoise pool. We visited the campground and saw Mooney Falls from the top. Mooney Falls, the tallest in the area, plunges 200 feet. On the way back, we stopped at the fried bread stand to enjoy freshly made Havasupai fry bread.
The following day, we explored the bottom of Havasu Falls, admiring the turquoise water and terraces. We also hiked to Little Navajo Falls, a hidden gem created by a 2008 flood, with cascades forming turquoise pools. Later, we visited the adventurous 50 Foot Falls.
On the final day, rain was forecast, so we decided against taking the helicopter back and began our 9-mile hike early. After dropping off our bags for the mule, we enjoyed the scenery along the way, using ponchos when it started raining. We stopped for lunch (Rava pongal) before tackling the last 1.5 miles, which included a 1,200-foot climb. Though tiring, we encouraged each other and made it to the top, where our bags were waiting.
It was an unforgettable experience filled with incredible scenery and adventure.
